Dr. Eugene Van Sickle, University of North Georgia (Â鶹ÊÓƵ) associate provost for undergraduate programs, won the Journals, Memoirs and Letters book award as part of the 2025 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards.

Van Sickle teamed up with Dr. James Robbins Jewell of North Idaho College on "Waging War for Freedom with the 54th Massachusetts: The Civil War Memoir of John W.M. Appleton," which earned them the honor. Their source material had been stored for decades at West Virginia University, where both Van Sickle and Jewell earned their Ph.Ds, before they turned it into a book.

Appleton was the first of the white officers in the most famous Civil War regiment of Black soldiers. Van Sickle said he was grateful to be able to shed light on how Appleton documented his history-making group.

"These guys understood the importance of the moment," Van Sickle said. "The lengths they went to document it, they knew this was a moment of great consequence."

The book award winners received a plaque honoring the book and a $1,000 cash award.

The Army Historical Foundation, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the American soldier.
