Two physics majors to participate in Posters on the Hill
For the first time in a decade, two University of North Georgia (Â鶹ÊÓƵ) students will present their research to the U.S. Congress in a virtual event April 27-28.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ senior Suzy Steel and junior Rebecca Corley will participate in the Council on Undergraduate Research's (CUR) Posters on the Hill 2021. The two women pursuing degrees in physics were among 60 students selected for the annual event.
"In any given year, only 10% or less of submitted posters are selected," said Dr. Anastasia Lin, assistant vice president of research and engagement. She said the last time Â鶹ÊÓƵ students presented at Posters on the Hill was 2011.
Steel said it is especially rewarding since Â鶹ÊÓƵ is considered a small institution.
"The Council of Undergraduate Research and others have recognized the importance of our research and how it can impact science," said the 22-year-old from Alpharetta, Georgia.
Corley and Steel's research focuses on collisions between electrons and different nuclei. The two study the collisions and the particle debris field through computer simulations.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ names Lloyd interim provost
Dr. Steven Lloyd will serve as interim provost of Â鶹ÊÓƵ, effective Nov. 1 until a permanent president is announced. He has served as vice provost since January 2019.
Students embrace research at REUs
Students across multiple disciplines at Â鶹ÊÓƵ took part in National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates and similar programs this summer.
Co-authored work accepted into peer-reviewed journal
The co-authored article of Dr. Esther Morgan-Ellis and students Charlotte Nease and Sofia Perez was accepted into a peer-reviewed journal.
Officers grew thanks to opportunities at Â鶹ÊÓƵ
Jaden Clark-Davidson and Brandon Clark-Davidson were two of the 20 Â鶹ÊÓƵ cadets who commissioned Sept. 10 as second lieutenants in the Army and Georgia Army National Guard.
