Learning Support Explained

Some students are required to take Learning Support (LS) classes in English or math. This is based on your high school GPA and your ACT, SAT, or placement test scores.

Your required LS courses for the semester can be found on the page and in your Academic Tranguid in Banner.

Your Learning Support requirements will be reviewed and updated every semester.

Corequisite Learning Support Courses

Learning support courses are taken in the same semester as their college-level course counterparts, and are referred to as corequisite courses.
In other words, corequisites are pairs of classes that you take together, such as:

ENGL 0999 and ENGL 1101
MATH 0997 and MATH 1001
MATH 0998 and MATH 1101
MATH 0999 and MATH 1111

You complete your Learning Support requirement when you pass the college-level course in the pair.

You must attend class, participate, and turn in all coursework for both classes in the pair.

Opting out of Learning Support Requirements

Ways to Opt Out of Learning Support

If you took the ACT or SAT and didn’t send your scores yet, you still can.
Sending your scores will not change your acceptance. It may help you skip some Learning Support classes.

Email a screenshot of your individual test score report (not a combined or superscore) to learning.support@ung.edu.

You can also choose to take a placement test.

Opt Out of English LS
Learning Support English

You can opt out of the English support class if you meet one of these:

You already passed a college English class with a C or better.

Your high school GPA is 2.7 or higher, and you finished all required English classes.

Your EPI score is 4280 or higher.

You score 243+ on Accuplacer Reading and 4+ on WritePlacer.

Good to Know

Your GPA is based on your required high school courses, not electives.

The EPI score uses your GPA and your ACT or SAT scores.

If You Don’t Meet these Requirements
You will take two English classes at the same time:

ENGL 0999 (extra help)

ENGL 1101 (college English)

You can take ENGL 1101 alone if you have one of these:

A 2.7+ GPA

An EPI of 4280+

A 243+ Reading score and a 4+ WritePlacer score

If not, you will take:
ENGL 0999 + ENGL 1101 together in your first semester.

Opt Out of Math LS
Learning Support Math

You may be able to skip the Learning Support Math class if you meet one of the requirements below.

You can skip Learning Support Math if you:

Already passed a college-level Area A math course with a D or higher

Have a high school GPA of 3.4 or higher and you finished all required high school math classes

Score 266 or higher on the Accuplacer QRAS test

Score 46 or higher on the ALEKS math placement test

Area A math courses include:
MATH 1001, MATH 1101, MATH 1111, MATH 1113, MATH 1401, and MATH 1450.

What Is ALEKS?
ALEKS is an online math test that checks what math skills you already know.
Your ALEKS score helps �鶹��Ƶ place you into the right math class.

ALEKS can help you:

Skip Learning Support Math

Qualify for stand-alone college math

Save time and money by starting in the right course

Key ALEKS score ranges:

46 or higher: You can take a stand-alone math class

30–45: May require Learning Support if your major is STEM or Business

Below 30: You will take a Learning Support math pair

Students are not assigned Learning Support if one of these is true:

Your GPA is 3.4 or higher,

Your SAT Math is 510+,

Your ACT Math is 20+,

Your Accuplacer QRAS is 266+,

Your ALEKS score is 46+

If your GPA is between 3.1 and 3.39 (Corequisite Level)

You will not take Learning Support if you are NOT a STEM or Business major.

If you are a STEM or Business major and your scores are:

SAT Math 480–509

ACT Math 17–19

Accuplacer QRAS 258–265

ALEKS 30–45

You will take:

MATH 0999 + MATH 1111 together (extra support + college algebra).

If your GPA is below 3.1 (Foundations Level), or your scores are:

SAT Math below 480

ACT Math below 17

Accuplacer QRAS below 258

ALEKS below 30

You will take one of these Learning Support math pairs:

MATH 0997 + MATH 1001

MATH 0998 + MATH 1101

These pairs give you extra support while you take college-level math.
