Dr. Elisabeth O. Burgess joined University of North Georgia in February of 2025 as the Dean of the College of Arts & Letters and Professor of Sociology. Dr. Burgess received her PhD and MA in Sociology from University of Southern California and BS in Sociology from Old Dominion University in Virginia.  Prior to Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Dr. Burgess worked at Georgia State University in Atlanta for 27 years.  Her positions at GSU included Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts & Sciences, Director of the Gerontology Institute, and Professor of Gerontology and Sociology.

She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Southern Gerontological Society and has received the Gordon Streib Distinguished Gerontologist Award from the Southern Gerontological Society and the Champion of Change Award from the Culture Change Network of Georgia. As a scholar, Dr. Burgess has studied family and intimate relationships, family caregiving and long-term care.  Her research has been supported through grants from the National Institute on Aging and the Centers for Medicare Medicaid/State of Georgia Civil Monetary Penalties Fund.  Dr. Burgess’s research has appeared in The Gerontologist, Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Journal of Applied Gerontology, Dementia, Journal of Aging Studies, Journal of Marriage and Family and other professional journals.
